I’ve put in my miles like old Johnny Cash And traveled the whole world around But I can’t seem to make memories last Or mine the gold that I’ve found. Nobody taught me the language of truth Until it couldn’t but hurt It came from on high, sudden and cruel And never but never from church . [And they say…everything…happens for a reason But you know, I know, that just ain’t half true They say…they say…to everything there’s a season And I know, that once, at least I had you.] Can’t feel the magic at bars anymore No matter how much I pour The drinks fall like soldiers but the man in the mirror I ain’t never seen him before I was locked up in a dark lonely cell Until I set myself free Now I watch the swifts and grackles Whistle and whirl above me. [And they say…everything…happens for a reason But you know, I know, that just ain’t half true They say…they say…to everything there’s a season And I know, that once, at least I had you.] I followed the crow to East and to West To North and South did I go And now through some strange alchemy Nowhere is always my home. I breathe out deeply and go on my way Stand on my tiptoes to pray I breathe in lightly, let the devil in Just enough to feel sane. [And they say…everything…happens for a reason But you know, I know, that just ain’t half true They say…they say…to everything there’s a season And I know, that once, at least I had you.] [And they say…everything…happens for a reason But you know, I know, that just ain’t half true They say…they say…to everything there’s a season And I know, that once, at least I had you.]

about

This second single from Language of the Birds is steeped in regret and gratitude. The song sounds timeless, albeit with a definite nod to classic country. The slightly eerie lap steel and lyrics provide a perfect soundtrack for all the unsettled wanderers, itinerants and outsiders out there. Enjoy both the full band and acoustic versions.
